Five for Tuesday - Tickling your Funny Bone

November 18, 2008

We all know that a preschooler's sense of humor can leave something to be desired.  A great joke around here is along the lines of identifying orange as pink or declaring that a dog says moo.  So here are a few books that my preschooler finds hilarious - and there are even a couple that amuse me too.

  • If you Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Joffe Numeroff.  If you give a pig a pancake, he'll want some syrup.  Are you laughing?  No, neither am I, but this one is always good for a giggle.  You can complete the collection with If you Give a Moose a Muffin and If you Give a Mouse a Cookie.  If your preschool does Scholastic books check there, we got the whole set pretty cheap that way.
  • Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish.  We have a stack of books from this series (bound to happen when you name your kid Amelia), and while the original is pretty clever after that many of them are too contrived to be funny.  My daughter doesn't understand the puns, but she does get that Amelia is silly, and she loves silly.
  • Three Tree Circus by Adam Rex.  This is one of the books that I really enjoy reading over and over.  Great language with a fun cadence, wonderful illustrations, and a tree-climbing elephant.  How can you go wrong?
  • Falling Up by Shel Silverstein.  Hoo boy, so many of these are just inappropriate and not the sort of thing I want to teach my preschooler, but I read it anyway because she loves the pictures and finds it hilarious.  No accounting for taste.
  • Good Night, Good Knight by Shelley Moore Thomas.  A brave knight meets three dragons!  Who have demands!  Like a drink of water, and a bedtime story and a good night kiss.  They wear bunny slippers too.  It's even a little fun for the grown ups.
